HANDOVER CEREMONY OF IRRIGATION FACILITIES REHABILITED IN RWAMAGANA DISTRICT UNDER JAPAN GRANT AID

On November 5, 2020, irrigation facilities rehabilitated in Eastern Province, Rwamagana District under Japan Grant Aid, were handed over to farmers.

The Project for Rehabilitation of Irrigation Facilities in Rwamagana District kicked off in November 2018 for a two-year duration, covered three marshlands totaling 170 hectares in Kigabiro, Mwulire, and Rubona sectors, and is set to benefit 1,174 farmers mainly for rice production.  

This USD 20 million Project included rehabilitation of two storage dams, Cyimpima and Gashara, construction of one new storage dam (Bugugu), construction of a 23.7 km long concrete main canals along the three irrigation schemes, construction of secondary canals, as well as capacity building of farmers in irrigation water management.

The handover ceremony was attended by the Governor of Eastern Province, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Rwanda, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, the Chief Representative of JICA, the Director General of Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), Senior officials from RAB, farmers, and houses of media.
