Overview and Background

Songa station was created by the law establishing the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB); it was established by LAW N°14/2017 OF 14/04/2017.This law specifies that: RAB’s Station has the general mission of championing the agriculture sector development into a knowledge based; technology driven and market oriented industry, using modern methods in crop, animal, fisheries, forestry and soil and water management in food, fibre and fuel wood production and processing. But the specific mandate for station of RAB enabling it to carry out research, agricultural or animal resources extension at the level of farmers and which has the powers to manage both the staff and the property located in that zone.

Songa station headquarters is located in Southern Province, Huye District, Kinazi Sector, one part is located in Kabona Cell other part is located in Gitovu Cell, Akarambo village, near the main road Kigali-Huye. It has two sites namely; Songa site and Kigembe site. Songa station have 392 Ha at Songa site, this land is used for farm (grazing), forge cultivation and infrastructure used for administrative, cowsheds, stores and habitation. At Kigembe site there is a land of 46,9 ha which is used for aquaculture and fisheries program, forest, office space, stores and laboratories. As the one of the Stations of the whole country helps RAB to reach its goals and mission. It promotes research and extension in animal resources development by making a focus on research for efficiency and effective productivity.
