Crop Protection Programme aims at improving agriculture production through development and dissemination of pest and disease management technologies. The main activities undertaken by this programme during the period of 2013-2014 were: monitoring and control of pest and diseases; promotion of plant health clinics; development of green and yellow pest and disease management packages and distribution of extension materials.1. PEST AND DISEASE MONITORING
The main pests and diseases found on major crop were controlled using pesticide application or farmers were advised to use good agriculture practices. Lepidoptera sp. damaged many crops in the Eastern Province (Photo 59) and it was controlled through application of cypermethrine.
2. PLANT HEALTH CLINICS
Plant clinics were the main extension approach used to monitor pests and diseases outbreaks and to give recommendations to farmers for pest management. Table 52 shows the location of plant clinics in the country with working schedule.
3. GREEN/YELLOW LISTS FOR PEST AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT
To promote better management of pests and diseases, the Crop protection program has developed two management packages for main pest and disease problems in major crops (Table 54). The green package includes locally available and environment friendly options, while the yellow package includes recommendations on types, frequency and doses of pesticide applications. Both packages were availed to local agronomist to guide them about the range of the available options.
