23 November 2011- Hon. Minister Kalibata met with United States Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Susan Rice today at Masaka Dairy Development Center. Ambassador Rice is in the country for four days and while here was interested in learning more about the agriculture sector. US Ambassador to Rwanda, Donald Koran, joined Hon. Minister Kalibata and Ambassador Rice.

During the visit to the dairy center the honored guests first met with members of the Rwanda National Dairy Board. The members, comprised of farmers, milk traders and processors, informed the Ambassadors on the milk industry in Rwanda. The dairy sector contributes 16% to the agriculture sector and as such is an important part of the Rwandan economy. This discussion was followed by a visit to Dairy Quality Assurance Lab (DQAL) where Director David Mupenzi demonstrated the various ways milk can be tested for bacteria, mastitis, water content, milk content, etc. DQAL is a private company that started with funding from USAID.

The official visit concluded with the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) Bull Station. This bull station supplies the entire country with semen for artificial insemination of cattle. Semen is collected 2 times per week from 13 bulls of jersey, fresian, and ankole breeds, amounting to enough semen to artificially inseminate approximately 10,000 cows weekly. Ambassador Rice and Koran were able to see how the process of collecting semen and testing works.

Hon Minister Kalibata stressed the importance of improved breed cows to advance the dairy industry in Rwanda and closed the official visit by thanking Ambassador Rice for her interest in learning more about Rwandan agriculture.
