Private sector urged to invest in Agricultural sector

The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources Dr. Agnes Kalibata has called on the business community to invest in agri-businesses. She was addressing journalists at the ministry headquarters office located at Kacyiru" The current involvement of the private sector in agro-business activities is still very low and I think it’s imperative for them to aggressively exploit this industry because it is profitable; it will also help promote food security in the country,” Dr. Agnes Kalibata said. She observed that if more businesses got involved in various agri-business activities, it would make Rwanda a major food-exporting country, thus turning the economy in the region.
The minister said that currently, a big percentage of those involved in agricultural activities are small-scale farmers and ask media to show others opportunity they found agricultural sector. The ministry has put in place various mechanisms aimed at mobilising the private sector to come on board to venture into the sector, she explained. Kalibata said also that the ministry was always at the disposal of people who need guidance on which area to invest in, as well as for support, including facilitating prospective investors to acquire loans. She said that, this year, the ministry plans to step up irrigation programmes, to help increase production volumes, adding that it was yet another opportunity for the private sector. The ministry will also continue to construct terraces on the hill side terrains to control soil erosion, she added. This press conference done after a field visit done by the journalists from different media Houses available in Rwanda , in an event organised by MINAGRI known as Media week. The Minister has appreciated all the questions and ideas provided by these journalists, because they were coming from the deep knowledge got from the field or the grassroots level. She ended by communicating to the press that even if the time of harvesting the season 2012A is going to be a rainy season, different measures have been put in place by the ministry to take care of the production, and ask the farmers to take their responsibility in using those opportunities. And concluded that the media week have to be a quarterly activity due to its importance.
